Condition Does Not Disqualify a Car

No Title? Call Before You Give Up
Florida transfers vehicle ownership through the certificate of title, so a normal sale needs one. That is the rule, and any buyer telling you otherwise on the phone should worry you.
But a missing piece of paper is not the same as no title. Most of these situations have a route through the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles system:
Title lost or destroyed. If the vehicle is still registered to you, you can apply for a duplicate title through the county tax collector. Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Pasco all have offices that handle this, and in many cases it can be started online.
The registered owner died. Florida law provides for transfer of ownership by operation of law under Statute 319.28, which is the route for inherited vehicles. What paperwork you need depends on whether the estate went through probate.
The car is in a relative’s name and they have moved or lost interest. The title has to come from whoever the state says owns it. Sometimes that is one phone call to sort out, sometimes it is not.
You bought it and never transferred it. This one is common and fixable, but the paperwork trail matters.

What Happens After We Buy It
Two things protect you after the car leaves, and both are worth doing the same day:
Keep your license plate. In Florida the plate belongs to you, not to the car. Take it off before the truck leaves. You can transfer it to another vehicle or surrender it to the tax collector.
File a notice of sale with FLHSMV. This tells the state you no longer own the vehicle and separates you from anything that happens to it afterward. It can be filed online and it takes a few minutes.
One warning worth repeating: do not cancel the insurance until the plate is transferred or surrendered. Florida requires continuous coverage while a registration is active, and dropping the policy first is how people end up with a suspended license over a car they no longer own.
What Happens to the Car After We Buy It
Junk cars do not go to a hole in the ground. Fluids come out first, because gasoline, oil, coolant, and refrigerant all have to be drained and handled separately under Florida environmental rules. Then the parts with life left in them come off: alternators, starters, transmissions, doors and body panels that match a common model, and wheels.
What is left is crushed and shredded, and the steel goes back to a mill to become new steel. A car is one of the most thoroughly recycled objects most people ever own, which is the reason a dead one still has a price at all.
